About the work
In 1921, the Venetian glass company Venini was founded. Its first editioned works, designed by Vittorio Zecchin, drew on Venetian renaissance heritage. The Veronese vase was named after a vase depicted by the painter Veronese in various versions of the Annunciation made by him and his studio in the 16th century. The vase in the painting has been much copied over the years, and has made its way into glassmaking vernacular to stand in for both a Venetian tradition of hand-skills and its virtuosity.
For this vase, I have used a technique of overheating and ruining a form, then re-squeezing it to this Veronese shape. I’m interested in making things incorrectly, and uninterested in endlessly pursuing virtuosity or perfection, which as a tradition does not feel as though it truly belongs to me.
