About Conditions

Conditions is a low-cost studio programme for artists located in Croydon since 2018. It gives 24/7 access to studio space and structured critical conversations to develop each artist’s work, as well as encouraging collaboration and collective work on exhibitions and events.

Conditions offers participating artists a programme of talks, support and workshops from a wide range of Associates comprising artists, writers, musicians, performers, curators and educators. It is aimed at addressing the increasing cost of both studio space and education for artists in London, by providing an alternative model.

Conditions is co-founded by artist and educator Matthew Noel-Tod and artist David Panos. It is led by Matthew Noel-Tod, whose work in art education includes previously running the Moving Image degree at University of Brighton: a pioneering course in artists’ film and video.

Conditions has featured in The New York Times, The Art Newspaper, Art Monthly and The Independent.

About The Shop

Conditions Shop is an online store featuring work from the multi-disciplinary studio holders at Conditions. It features unique art works, series and editions as well as objects that inhabit the intersections between art and design.

Conditions Shop feeds into the self-sustaining model of Conditions Studio Programme, providing support for both the artists we host, and the Conditions project itself.

All proceeds from the Conditions Shop go to the artists and to support running the programme and studios.

Over the past year debates about the economy of the art world have begun to challenge stigmas around ‘affordable art’ and the current models that only serve the very wealthy and create anxiety for artists. Hierarchies between art and design are also breaking down and we hope that our shop is part of this ongoing process of exploring new ways for artists to support themselves and reach an audience. We welcome requests for commissions or collaborations.

Conditions Shop is open as a temporary physical shop and exhibition at Unit 66 of the Whitgift Centre, Croydon, CR0 1UR
